The X-Men universe is coming to the small screen in a major way. First, FX’s Legion debuts on February 8. Soon to follow is the newly ordered, untitled X-Men live-action series, created by Matt Nix (Burn Notice). Very little is known about the new show as it is still in its infancy, but it will be set in the same universe as the movie franchise and the pilot episode will be directed by veteran X-Men director Bryan Singer.
Since the new X-Men series takes place in the same world as the movies, there is a wide range of timelines and characters that could be a part of it. The only characters known to be involved in the show so far are the Sentinels, as seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Nix is reluctant to give away any details about who else will be a part of the new show, but strongly suggested in a new interview that fans of the franchise will not be disappointed.
Speaking to CNet, Nix described the overarching story of the new X-Men series as a different perspective, one that “definitely comes at the world of mutants from the side.” He hinted that the show will be seen at least partially from the perspective of a humans who discover the unseen world of mutants, rather than the point-of-view of established X-Men. When asked if he could talk about any famous X-Men characters who could be a part of the series, Nix could not get into details but suggested that fans will be happy with who shows up.
“Some of those things are slightly up in the air, but the fact that it’s a question I can’t answer tells you something. … Suffice it to say it’s a show that contains some characters that fans will be excited about. I can’t talk about specifics, but it’s not like there are no X-Men in it.”
Nix also reiterated the already-known premise of a “family that discovers their kids are mutants and has to go on the run.” This could certainly be where the Sentinels could come into play. The involvement of the mutant-hunting robots signal that Bolivar Trask, played by Peter Dinklage in Days of Future Past, could play a role in the new show. Another Sentinel-related character that could excite fans of the comics is Nimrod, an advanced, virtually indestructible version of the Sentinels that was the basis for a variant of the robots depicted in Days of Future Past.
The logical choice for a familiar X-Men character who would appear in the new series is Professor Charles Xavier. It is Professor X’s dissertation at Oxford University that teaches Trask about mutants in the first place and inspires him to create the Sentinel program in Days of Future Past. However, Xavier is also well-represented in the franchise and isn’t necessarily a character that would “excite” fans. But Nix’s cryptic comments are sure to only build more excitement for the series.
The as-yet untitled X-Men TV series has no release date.
