Hulu is creating an television series based on the 1994 romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral. The film, which was penned by Richard Curtis and directed by Mike Newell, is one of the most beloved romcoms of its era, propelling Hugh Grant to stardom and allowing the Blackadder co-creator to cement his position as one of the chief romantic writers for the big screen.
Now, the movie is going to act as inspiration for something a little different. As revealed by Deadline, Hulu is bringing a series inspired by Four Weddings and a Funeral to television, with the project in question taking on an anthology format. The show itself is going to be written and executive produced by Mindy Kaling of The Mindy Project.
Kaling will be executive producing alongside Matt Warburton, original writer Richard Curtis, Jonathan Prince, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner from Working Title, and Howard Klein of 3 Arts Entertainment. Universal TV will be producing alongside MGM Television, which owns the rights to the original Four Weddings and a Funeral movie.
The Four Weddings and a Funeral anthology series will follow a similar path to the film, focusing on a group of friends as they take part in the titular events. Each season of the show is set to follow a different arc, and the series’ structure could take the form of following one lead through each season as the characters and locations change. This structure could certainly work, with the original film segmented into the various weddings (and one funeral) to great effect already.
Kaling is going to be busy, with numerous projects now on the go. Although The Mindy Project season 6 will be its last, Kaling is already working on a talk show host comedy with Paul Feig, and Four Weddings and a Funeral could act as Kaling’s next big television project. As well as that, Kaling also has roles in A Wrinkle in Time and Ocean’s Eight, with both movies set to arrive next year.
With Kaling on board, Hulu will no doubt be hoping for more of the great comedy writing that she is known for. The streaming service made history through its Outstanding Drama Emmy win for The Handmaid’s Tale, and there will be high expectations for Four Weddings and a Funeral to help continue the upward trajectory of Hulu’s original content. It’s early days, but given the source material and the writing talent involved, the show has the potential to be something special.
