Xbox took to the stage at E3 2019 to confirm a brand-new piece of DLC for Forza Horizon 4, which ended up being a collaboration with LEGO. Microsoft had plenty of major titles to discuss during E3 2019, as well as the company’s forthcoming hardware dubbed Xbox Scarlett. Yes, Halo Infinite finally had some details dropped and Gears 5 is getting a new mode, but sometimes it’s the smaller, unexpected reveals that hit hardest.
Microsoft acquiring Double Fine and adding it to the lineup of Xbox Game Studios developers was one such shocker, but it didn’t end there. Microsoft came locked and loaded with a number of surprises, like the Keanu Reeves appearing for Cyberpunk 2077. Not content on ending there, there were also a few eyebrow-raising crossovers that managed to gain attention – like the upcoming DLC for Forza Horizon 4.
After revealing a LEGO McLaren in the leadup to the reveal, Xbox Game Studios confirmed that the next major expansion for Forza Horizon 4 will feature a crossover with the Danish toymaker. Dubbed LEGO Speed Champions, the DLC will allow gamers to cruise around plowing through various LEGO obstacles. There are LEGO Brick Challenges that allow users to build a Master Builder’s house as their Brick Collection grows. The trailer for the Forza Horizon 4 expansion speaks volumes regarding the levels of joy present within the new content.
Driving a LEGO car is easily one of the funniest components of the reveal. Gamers can collect and race the new cars that come with LEGO Speed Champions, including the McLaren Senna, Ferrari F40 Competizione, and the 1967 Mini Cooper S Rally. After Forza Horizon 3 featured a crossover with Hotwheels, perhaps fans should have expected something similar with the latest game as well. The content arrives on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC on June 13, 2019.
Oddly enough, Forza Horizon 4’s partnership with LEGO wasn’t even the most bizarre crossover shown by Xbox at E3 2019. On top of the Gears Pop! mobile title, Gears of War 5 actually has Terminator DLC. These sorts of deals benefit both parties involved, and it’s great to see Microsoft so open to collaboration with some of its largest properties.
How open is Microsoft to collaborations? Well, rumor has it that Microsoft may be collaborating with Nintendo on a future Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character. Perhaps those industry mumblings will come to fruition during Nintendo’s E3 2019 presentation. Only time will tell, but Forza Horizon 4 and LEGO Speed Champions shows a new willingness from the Xbox brand.
